Louis Daniel Guiel (1843 - 1920)

According to his death certificate, Louis Daniel Guiel was the son of Amable Guiel and Euphrosine Brunette and was born on 21 MAY 1843 in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada. He came to the United States in 1861 and settled in Holyoke, Massachusetts where he married Rose Delima L'Homme dit D'Artois on 26 SEP 1871 in Precious Blood Church. She was born 14 FEB 1851, Marieville, Quebec, the daughter of Joseph L'Homme dit Artois and Rosalie Vien. Their marriage certificate says Louis' father was Alphonse Amos Guiel and his mother, Euphrosine Brunet. They had one son, Louis Uldege Exarias before Rose Delima's death.

TRANSLATION

The twenty May one thousand eight hundred forty-three, we, undersigned parish priest, baptize Louis born today of the legitimate marriage of Amable Guaile, carpenter, and of Euphrosine Brunette of this parish. Godfather Louis Daniel, godmother (? Barbe ?) Brodeur, who do not know how to sign.

The family name here was spelled Guaile at the whim of the parish priest.
Louis Daniel Guiel (Guaile) was named after his godfather Louis Daniel. Was Louis the father of Captain Louis Daniels, Jr.?
A Louis Daniel also married an Ursule Brunette. Did Amable and Louis marry sisters?

Louis Daniel Guiel arrived in the US from Canada in 1861 according to the 1900 census. A hand-me-down story says he worked for a time as a baker making hard tack for the Union troops. He is listed in the 1876 Holyoke, Mass. city directory as Louis Gill, "wire puller" for Prentiss Wire living at 15 Fountain St. He is still working at Prentiss in 1882, but the directory lists his address and that of Eusebe Chagnon, his father-in-law, as 13 West Street. There was also listed a Napolean Gill, blacksmith for Lyman Mills. Napolean may or may not have been a relative; but previously, in Canada, there were blacksmiths in the family.

Louis married Mary Melanie Edwidge Chagnon on 10 NOV 1879, shortly after Rose Delima died, and had two or three children in Holyoke before moving to a farm on Potwine Lane in Amherst, Massachusetts. They had eight more children, the last, Viola Emma, being born in 1901. Those born in Amherst were baptized there in St. Brigid's Church. The Amherst directory of 1908 has them still living there, but the 1910 Federal Census has them living on another farm in Granby, MA where they lived until 1919. They raised a total of eleven children including Rose Delima's son, Louis Uldege Exarias. Their marriage is recorded in Holyoke city records as Lewis Gill to Douilda Chegnon.

The 1920 U.S. Census lists Louis Daniel as head of household on Hadley Street, South Hadley, MA where he died shortly after on 26 AUG 1920. He is buried in Notre Dame Cemetery in South Hadley. Mary Melanie Edwedge Chagnon died in South Hadley in 1941 and is also buried in Notre Dame Cemetery.

The Amherst Directory for 1906 gives this information:

Guiel, Arthur D., laborer, boards L. D. Guiel
Delia, bds L. D. Guiel, Potwine Lane
Henry, laborer, bds L. D. Guiel
Lena bds L. D. Guiel, Potwine Lane
