Browne Ancestors of Kilshannig, County Kerry, Ireland

Kilshannig Townland is a small village of less than one square mile located on the north shore of the Dingle Peninsula above Castlegregory on the point jutting into Tralee Bay. It's bordered on the north by the bay, on the south by Magherabeg, and by Fahamore on the west. Kilshannig and Magherabeg are in the Electoral Division of Castlegregory, Civil Parish of Killiney, Barony of Corkaguiny, County Kerry. Fahamore is in the Electoral Division of Castlegregory, Civil Parish of Stradbally, Barony of Corkaguiny, County of Kerry. It's important to know these divisions when searching civil records. Parish records will be found in Castlegregory. There is also a Kilshannig in County Cork, so be sure to select the right town.

Marriage of Patrick Browne of Kilshannig and Catherine Connor of Fahamore

Patrick and Catherine were married on January 30, 1872. He was the son of Maurice Browne (12), farmer of Kilshannig. Catherine was the daughter of James Connor (14), smith (blacksmith?) of Fahamore. Mothers' names not given. Patrick made his mark as signature; Catherine signed 'Cate' Connor.

Generation 3

Children of Patrick Browne (6) and Catherine Connor (7) of Kilshannig (My great-grandparents)

  1. Patrick Browne

  2. dob: 21 January 1874
    pob: Fahamore, Stradbally
    father: Patrick Browne of Kilshannig
    mother: Catherine Connor
    dom: 12 FEB 1898
    pom: Castlegregory
    dod: 11 January 1951
    pod: Kilshannig
    spouse: Margaret O'Connor, d/o John O'Connor and ?? Pierce
    children:
    1. Thomas, b. 1898
    2. Catherine Theresa, 1900-1981
    3. Michael, b. 1902
    4. Mary Margaret Browne, born in Kilshannig 25 SEP 1904 – died 24 DEC 1989 in Illinois.
    5. Patrick Joseph, 1906–1965

Patrick's burial record in Kilshannig says he died a sudden death with heart trouble in 1951 at age 74, but he was born in 1874 which would make him 76 when he died. He was a retired small farmer. It also says he was married at time of death, not widowed. If that is correct, then he must have remarried after Margaret O'Connor died in 1907.

His death record in Castlegregory says he died in kilshannig of cardiac failure with no medical attendant and that he was married, not widowed. Son Maurice present at death.

Margaret was born 29 FEB 1872, in Koundeeha, Maharees, Castlegregory, Kerry, Ireland. She died of Bright's disease at 35 years of age on 28 MAY 1907 as a farmer's wife. Her brother Thomas O'Connor was present at time of death in Kilshannig. Patrick's death record that says he was married at the time of his death in 1951, and not a widower.

    Death Record:

    age: 61 years
    occupation: farmer's wife ??
    status: married
cause of death: Rodent ulcer of both eyes and face. Eighteen years asthenia, certified. Catherine Browne, daughter, present at death.
Note: Rodent ulcer is now called nodular basal cell carcinoma. Asthenia refers to physical weakness or a lack of energy. It can affect specific body parts, or it may affect the entire body. Asthenia is not a disease, but it is a common sign of many different acute and chronic medical conditions. It can be a side effect of the 'Celtic Curse' or hemochromatosis which is a genetic disorder that causes the body to retain more iron than it can use. The results of the condition can range from mild to severe with organ failure and death at the extreme end. It is treatable by taking blood at regular intervals to reduce the excess iron and by diet modification, but it is incurable.

Hereditary hemochromatosis is very widespread in Ireland, particularly in the west, where intermarriage was thought to be the cause of the concentration. However, during the Irish Potato Famine or Great Hunger as it was also known, hemochromatosis is thought to have prevented the death of many who would not have survived due to iron deficiency. That is probably a more significant contributing factor than intermarriage in the high incidence of hemochromatosis in Ireland today. To read more about intermarriage and hereditary disease, go to my What's a Cousin page.

If haemochromatosis causes the body to retain too much iron, it seems that eating large amounts of potatoes would worsen the condition since they contain iron in a form that the body can readily assimilate. In addition, potatoes are a good source of vitamin C which helps the body acquire iron. Before the potato famine and up until Mary Browne's time, potatoes were the staple of the Irish diet and were eaten at every meal. The average adult male ate 12 - 15 pounds of spuds every day (verified). That could explain why so many death records report the cause of death in relatively young people as kidney failure, nephritis, liver disease, and weak heart.
Known Children of Maurice Browne and Mary Ashe:
    NOTE:
Mary Bridget Browne emigrated to the U.S. where she met and married John Patrick Courtney in Chicago.
They had a son John Patrick, Jr., deceased, who was the father of New York's present governor, Kathleen (Courtney) Hochul.
Mary Bridget Browne, then, was Kathleen (Courtney) Hochul's grandmother.
Maurice Browne and Mary Ashe were Kathleen's great-grandparents.
Maurice was also the brother of Mary Browne,3my grandmother.
So, my great-grandparents, Patrick Browne6 and Catherine Connor7, are Kathleen Hochul's great-great grandparents, making her my second cousin once removed.
    What's a cousin?

    occupation: laborer, fisherman
spouse: Mary (Hickson) Kennedy of Kilshannig.

    Note:
According to the 1911 census of Kilshannig in County Kerry, Ireland, Mary was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1874, the daughter of John Hickson as stated on her marriage record. At some time prior to 1898, she went to Ireland. She married John Kennedy, fisherman of Coundeeha, on 12 FEB 1898 and had six children before he died of phthisis (tie-sis or TB) at age 36 on 05 APR 1908. She had five children (one died) at the time of her marriage to Michael. She died in Kilshannig on 27 May 1947 at age 73 and is buried in Kilshannig Cemetery with her daughter Bridget (Browne) Finn. Michael's name is not on the tombstone.

I am trying to find out who John Hickson was, why and when he went to Holyoke. Who was his wife and mother of Mary? Mary was probably the daughter of John Hickson and Johanna Moriarty.

  6. Patrick Browne(6) was born to Maurice Browne(12) and Margaret Slattery(13) on August 15, 1842 in Kilshannig, Castlegregory, County Kerry, Ireland. He was baptized the same day having Michael Brown and Ellen Brown as sponsors (godparents). He married Catherine Connor(7) on January 30, 1872 in Castlegregory, County Kerry, Ireland. James Connor and Edmund Brown witnessed the ceremony. Patrick died April 1, 1918 in Kilshannig at 75 years of age. Cause of death was recorded as 'Senile Decay', six months, no medical attendant. Catherine, wife of deceased, was present at time of death and made her mark on the death certificate.

Catherine Connor(7) was born to James Connor(14) and Margaret Cournane(15) of Fahamore on 05 November 1847 in Fahamore, Maharees, County Kerry, Ireland.
Go to my Connor Family Page

The 1911 census says that Catherine had five children. Her Castlegregory baptism record gives a birth date of 05 NOV 1847, but the 1901 census lists her as being 60 year old which would mean she was born in 1841. The 1911 census says she aged only five years since 1901. If she was 65 in 1911, she would have been born in 1846.

However, a Catherine Brown from Maharees died in the Dingle Workhouse on 16 MAR 1911. She was a 65 year old widow of a laborer who died of liver cancer with icterus (jaundice)of 3 months duration, certified. No family member was present at time of death.

This might not be the right Catherine (Spillane) Browne.

James' marriage record said his occupation was 'farmer', not laborer, and that Kate Spillane was a minor in 1865.
His death record said he was 60 years old in 1899, making his birth year 1839.

The original 1911 Census of Ireland Form A, dated April 2, 1911, had fifteen Columns. Four columns fell under the heading 'PARTICULARS AS TO MARRIAGE' which asked the marital status of residents, number of years married, number of live births in present marriage, and the number of those surviving.

In 1911, Patrick Browne and Catherine (Connor) were married 41 years and had a total of 5 children, all living.
Maurice Browne and Mary (Ashe ) were married 11 years and had a total of 3 children, all living.
Mary aged only 8 years in the 10 years since the last census.

The birth years for Patrick and Catherine would be 1843, and 1846 respectively which doesn't agree with the 1901 census

Generation 5

Maurice Browne(12) and Margaret Slattery(13)
(My great-great grandparents of uncertain parentage) - See Note

(12) Maurice Browne

dob: ca. 1793

dom: before 1828, based on the birth of Edmund, their oldest known son, in 1828.
pom:
dod: 17 MAR 1875

spouse: Margaret Slattery

Maurice Browne died on March 17, 1875 at 82 years of age in Kilshannig of heart disease of six months duration followed by bronchitis in his final two weeks, certified. He was married at the time of death, and his son Maurice was present when he died.

NOTE:
Based solely on the 04 MAY 1832 marriage date of Michael Browne of Kilshannig and Nora Moriarty of Coanndeeha, I made the assumption that the groom would be about the right age to have been the brother of Maurice Browne who married Margaret Slattery shortly before 1828. If so, the parents of the groom, Maurice Browne and Mary Ashe, would also be the parents of Maurice who married Margaret Slattery. Coanndeeha is probably a misspelling of Candeeha??

(13) Margaret Slattery (I need help to determine for certain who Margaret's parents were.)

dob: 1801 (based on age at time of death according to her death certificate) Other websites say she was born in June of 1811.)
pob: Kilshannig

spouse: Maurice Browne

Margaret (Slattery) Browne died a widow at 80 years of age on July 24, 1881 in Kilshannig. Her son Patrick of Kilshannig was present. The cause of her death was Bright's disease of one fortnight duration. There was no medical attendant. The death record says she was 80 years old, but those accounts are notoriously inaccurate. I based her date of birth on that information, but it might be several years off. I have not found a birth record for her.

Another website has a Joseph Slattery and Hannah Kearney named as parents of Margaret who was born aound 1811, but still no birth record. Hannah Kearney was possibly from Killeentierna Parish, since a Catherine Kearney, daughter of Patrick Kearney and Catherine Slatery was baptized there on 16 NOV 1807. Sponsors were Joseph Slatery and Mary Slattery (the name might not be Mary but an abreviation - Mry.)

This is a possibility:
Born in Kilshannig, Castlegregory, Co Kerry, Ireland on 1811 to Joseph Slattery and Hannah Kearney. Margaret Slattery married Maurice Browne and had 6 children. She passed away on Jun 1881 in Kilshannig, Castlegregory, Co Kerry, Ireland.

Catherine Connor

    mother: Maria Cournane (Conmane?)

Catherine O'Connor (Doubtful! Connor changed to O'Connor, birthdates are different, birthplaces vary)
Catherine's name in Chicago would have been Browne, not O'Connor. Catherine (Connor) Browne was my mother's grandmother.
She never came to the United States.
